Green Buildings
Green, green, what is green? Do I want to be green? These are the right questions to ask. The future is high performance buildings. The new standard 189.1-2009 simplifies green building compliance options by unifying and amplifying a host of building standards for high performance green buildings. In addition to HVAC, ‘being green’ effects site location, water use, energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, building effects on the atmosphere, plus materials and resources. High Performance HVAC Green Building Objectives include:
- Distinguish the difference between sensible heat and latent heat.
- Understand the importance of pre-treating outside ventilation air.
- Use a psychrometric chart to determine the dewpoint temperature, moisture content, and enthalpy of air at given conditions.
- Identify air conditioning systems and operational methods that control humidity well.
- Identify methods of ventilation control that can provide adequate ventilation and conserve energy.
- Identify at least two advanced dehumidification systems that work exceptionally well at dehumidifying air in an energy efficient manner.
- Identify five cost-effective items to consider in re-commissioning that can have big impact on energy conservation.
